Rara lake popularly known as ‘Queen of Lakes’, situated at the remote area of far western Mugu district is the largest and deepest freshwater lake in Nepal. The lake is located at an altitude of 2,990m/9,810ft and has a surface of 10.8 Km2. The area around the lake is has been preserved under the name of Rara National Park.
Trekking to Rara Lake is one of the popular destinations for tourists all over the world. The rugged terrain, narrow routes, exceptional landscapes, the forest area around the national park and beautiful surrounding view of Himalayas make this area a perfect place to spend some time with mother nature. The beauty and the wilderness that you experience during the trek is simply amazing. Pine and juniper forests beautify the national park area. The park is also home to many wild animals like musk deer, black bear, ghoral and other rare species of flora and fauna.
During the trek, the trail also passes through clustered human settlement areas. Though people live very meager life here, the warm hospitality they offer is welcoming and appreciative. We also get chance to observe their culture and lifestyle from close. The trek to Rara lake is sure to provide you with bundle of unique experiences for lifetime.
Itinerary
Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport we offer you pick up facility from the airport and manage your stay at the most comfortable hotel in the city. You get to meet the team of trekkers and together we prepare for the trek. At the evening we offer you lavish welcome dinner with authentic Nepali Cuisine.
We offer you short trip to historical and cultural sites around Kathmandu valley: Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Stupa and Pashupatinath temple. You can also do some souvenir shopping during the sightseeing. After sightseeing we head back to hotel and get our clothing and trekking equipments ready and prepare for the trek.
Today we will take a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. Upon reaching Nepalgunj after an hour long flight we get to the hotel and have some rest. Nepalgunj is a popular city in western terai region. We may spend rest of the day strolling around the city and observing the terai lifestyle there. Overnight at the hotel in Nepalgunj.
We take an early flight from Nepalgunj to Jumla. Jumla is the remote region in western region of Nepal. The region has hilly landscapes and is surrounded by high hills. It is also a place where special variety of rice is cultivated and that too at the highest altitude. Due to higher altitude the place is dry and has sparse vegetation. We roam around the village and spend the night at a lodge there.
The trek on foot begins today. We start walking through the uphill trail. The walk through the trail will take us to Jugad Khola and we walk alongside the river. We head towards Chere Chaur passing Khalanga Bazar on the way. It is a small market area in the region. Further ahead we pass through village area before finally reaching Chere Chaur. We will be spending our night there.
We leave Chere Chaur early in the morning and head towards Chalachaur. The walk begins with uphill climb. We continue with the walk until reaching Jaljala pass. We move ahead crossing the pass and walking through the flat trail. The walk continues until we reach Chalachaur. We take rest and prepare for our stay there.
Today the trek starts with relatively tough uphill climb. The hills are steepin this area and the landscapes almost barren. We pass through village area on our way. The trail further ahead takes us to Jaljala khola. We cross the small river and head towards Sinja valley. The place has a historical significance. It was the capital of Khasa kingdom and kings ruled here. Ancient remains of palaces and temples were uncovered during the excavation. We will be spending the night at Sinja valley.
The trek starts early in the morning with uphill climb and alongside the Hima river. The trail then takes us to a village and passing the village we take steep uphill climbing. After some time the trail takes easy turn and we reach the village called Laha. We then walk alongside Ghatte Khola and head towards Gorosingha. Upon reaching Gorosingha we prepare for our night’s stay.
We leave Gorosingha early in the morning starting with the uphill walk along Chuchemara Danda. The splendid surrounding view of the Himalayan range can be viewed from here. From the top of the hill the placid and beautiful Rara lake can be viewed. The forest surrounding the lake makes the scene more amazing. We then head towards Rara lake. We come across some villages on our way. We then reach Murma village and from there the trail takes us to Chapri village. We will stay overnight in the Rara lake area.
We will be spending our day exploring around the Rara lake area. The massive lake and its splendid beauty is beyond explanation. The surrounding forest area with the hills and mountain peaks on the background makes the scene more pleasing. There are also colourful wild flowers around the lake area. We will enjoy boating in the lake. Night will be spent at Rara lake area.
We leave Rara lake and head towards Pina. The trail is flat and the walk is comfortable. We continue the walk until we reach Gamgadhi, headquarter of Mugu district. Further ahead the trail takes downhill turn leading to Pina village. We will be spending the night at Pina.
We leave Pina and head towards Burma. The landscape around the region is mostly covered by grasslands and wild flowers due to high altitude. We enjoy the view of hills and meadows along the way. We pass Ghurchi pass and few villages on our way. We then finally reach Burma. Overnight at Burma.
Today is the last day of our journey on foot. We will be heading towards Jumla. The trail passes through suspension bridges. Further, we come across Danphe Lagna pass on our way. The trail then takes us to Cherechaur from where we follow the same trail that we took before. We continue our walk until we reach Jumla. We will spend the night at lodge in Jumla.
We take an early flight from Jumla to Nepalgunj. The next flight to Kathmandu will also be on same day. Then we take the flight to Kathmandu. Upon reaching Kathmandu we take rest at the hotel and muse over the exiting time we have had. At the evening we offer you farewell dinner on grand success of the trek. The night will be spent at the hotel in Kathmandu.
Today is the final day and we get ready for the departure. We offer you the facility to drop at the Tribhuvan International Airport. We exchange final greetings and wishes and hope to see each other next time as well. We wish pleasant journey and bid the final goodbye.
