It was the restricted place until 1991 and from then was reopened by the government for the tourists. The place still preserves the ancient monasteries and caves. The ancient architecture and craft has been well preserved in these monasteries and caves. The four storey palace of the ancient king is the highlight of this place. The population here still speaks Tibetan language. People also follow the traditional cultural practices of Tibetan religion. The place is also popularly known as “The Forbidden Kingdom”.
